Vegan beyond food
The concept of vegan shoes was a Eureka moment for me. I didn’t know there was anything beyond food for vegan items. It was very refreshing for me to know there are options out there that I don’t have to feel guilty about. Well…maybe “less” guilty about. It’s a step in the right direction though right?!? Vegan shoes are footwear made without any animal ingredients or byproducts. They are considered cruelty-free but the question remains: are they really any better for the planet? Shoes can be made with a variety of materials that come from animals, including silk, wool, fur and leather. Vegan shoes use man-made pleathers and do not use any glue derived from an animal. To me, as long as one is aware and tries their best to buy shoes that are not made with animal skins, one can sleep with a clear conscience.
I found a really cool website called Inhabitots.com and they have PLAE’S collection of shoes. These shoes are really something to get excited about! I was extremely fascinated to learn that PLAE’s founder and chief designer, Ryan Ringholz used to design shoes for Puma and Diesel, but when he became a father he started to design kids’ shoes that can withstand heavy-duty play while managing to perfectly support developing feet. PLAE shoes are engineered using biometric science typically reserved for elite athletes, so they feel as good as they look. As a mom, this is a bonus! My kids are really into their sports, I want them to wear a great shoe that is made from ethical and sustainable materials, yet I don’t want them to have to compromise on quality. One of their best attributes is that they manage to look totally mainstream. This is the perfect alternative! I can’t wait to tell my family and friends!
Why Vegan Shoes?
Living vegan is extremely important because we live in a culture which emphasize our rights, freedoms and equality. We are the fortunate ones; but what about those without a voice? I’m referring to animals. Just because they cannot speak doesn’t mean it’s ok for us to kill them and eat them and do all sorts of cruel things to them. Some of the benefits I came up with for opting for vegan shoes are as follows:
Does not cause suffering, harm or death to animals
Vegan shoes are just as trendy and hip as non-vegan shoes
Breathable, light design
What vegan shoes are not:
Vegan shoes are not always as accessible or available
Styles and colours can be limited
Not always 100% vegan
Where Can You Buy Them?
Vegan shoes for children can be bought online or in stores. Here is a list of some of the places where they can be found:
Faith Shoes UK
T.U.K. Shoes UK and ebay
Payless Shoe Source
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Education is power. Now that I know that these options are available for children’s vegan shoes, how can I consider anything but vegan? If I absolutely have no other choice, then yes, I can say there was nothing else I could do. Now that I know there are choices out there and the varieties are quite diverse, I will be making sure I do my best to make the right choices for not only my children, but for my husband and I as well. I’ve already started telling my friends and family about this. Let’s see how far we can travel with vegan shoes for children. Have shoes, will travel!
