Growing up my mother always encouraged my sister and I to sleep on silk. She would sleep on a silk scarf wrapped around her pillow and found it was the reason her hair and skin looked so healthy. My grandmother also wore a silk scarf around her head when she was in the house so my families’ silk obsession goes back generations. This love affair with silk continued as my aunt, living in India, would bring home silk scarves as special gifts.
It was from this that the idea for The Ethical Silk Company began, with silk pillowcases and crib sheets being our first products. While researching for the company, I watched a documentary on silk production that showed the silk worms being boiled alive in the process in order to extract the silk.
Wanting an alternative, I found Ahimsa Silks, a beautiful eco-friendly mulberry silk which is produced without harming or killing any silk worms. The result is a beautifully rich silk which, because of the particular way it is produced, is softer than regular silk with an exquisite pearl like finish.
Having found this ethically made silk, I began working with ethical & Fairtrade tailoring units for the tailoring of our products. Similarly, as I wanted an ethically produced silk I could work with, Fairtrade tailoring is equally important to me and plays a central role in The Ethical Silk Company. The alternative to this is just not an option as the integrity of our products is as important as the quality. Our products are tailored in Mehera Shaw, a
Fairtrade tailoring unit in Jaipur, India, that uses a transparent, vertical supply chain with fair labor.
As the popularity of our pillowcases and crib sheets grew, our product line developed to include scarves and wraps and most recently, a silk loungewear range. A breathable fabric and a natural temperature, silk helps the body retain heat in cold weather while excess heat is expelled in warm weather, helping your body maintain a comfortable, natural temperature. Following the pillowcases and wraps, the lounge-wear range was the perfect follow up. Although we keep the pillowcases and cot sheets their natural colour, our lounge-wear range is block printed by hand at our Fair Trade US certified tailoring unit. The printed items are block printed onto the fabric by hand, one at a time, so each piece is unique. Dyes used are low impact, AZO free dyes and all water used is treated and recycled.
Committing to the importance of social responsibility, The Ethical Silk Company has pledged to donate 10% profits to charity – 5% to Jeevan Jyothi AIDS Centre in Theni, India, and 5% to Focus Ireland, a charity that works to prevent people becoming, remaining or returning to homelessness. Every aspect of our product gives us a reason to be proud.
